Biography

Similar to his style of music, ODIE is the product of a diverse and dynamic upbringing. “Toronto is one of the best places to grow up because it’s so multicultural,” he reflects, having spent the majority of his childhood in Scarborough. The son of Nigerian immigrants, ODIE cites Fela Kuti in his trifecta of influences. Kuti’s rhythms and energy inspire him, along with Coldplay’s atmospheric sounds and Kid CuDi’s palpable conviction. Bringing together these elements Alternative Rock, Hip Hop, Soul, and Afro-Gospel/Beat, he transcends his listeners to a world built on an ethereal yet natural soundscape. Like these examples, ODIE creates art that defies labels and genres.

As an adolescent, ODIE’s family relocated to California’s Bay Area. There, he encountered new cultures that led him through his formative years. Along with co-producer/engineer Ya’qob and manager/long time friend Chris, he founded UNITÉ, a collective built upon a modern expression of culture and diversity through art and music. “We pretty much do everything ourselves; production, writing, art direction and etc.”, he says. The group have been working together since 2014 and are developing multiple collaborative and solo works to be put out in the near future.

In 2015, ODIE’s first breakthrough single “Senorita” began as a nonchalant Soundcloud posting of a demo. Over 100,000 people organically found and spread the song, and after a feature on Soulection Radio, more than five-figures of fans sought out the elusive artist. As ODIE followed up the song with the tangible “My Own,” his work was proven to be more than worthy of praise. “I’ve always believed that no matter what, good music will find its way.” ODIE reflects. Word has spread for a creator who has shunned the spotlight in an effort to refine his craft. Throughout the last four years he has spent majority of his energy finding and cultivating his own unique sound and character in his music. “I have a clear vision for myself as an artist now, including lofty expectations for the music I want to make, and the things that I want to do. Now it’s just a matter of sharing it with everyone.”

After just seven songs released to the public (including 2017’s “Trance Dance”), ODIE readies his debut project. “It’s sort of my coming of age story,” he notes. “2018 is the year where my fans will be fully introduced to who I am as an artist and as a human, flaws and all. In the past, I’ve just given glimpses.” Now, listeners new and familiar will get “the most evolved” version of the artist with the captivating voice and versatile songs built on rhythm, melody, and universal songwriting. The project will evolve in real-time and colorful sounds, just like the story behind this mysterious and refreshing musician.
